Close Encounters with the NZSO

In a new venture for the NZSO, the orchestra and conductor Richard Gill will present two informative concerts – Close Encounters - on Thursday 19 August and Friday 20 August 6.30pm in the Wellington Town Hall, where we will break down Beethoven and Dvorak piece by piece, and explain why their symphonies soar!  I wondered if this is something that might interest U3A members.

We all agree on the magic of Beethoven, and the brilliance of Dvorak. But what makes their symphonies true masterpieces? Care to join us to find out?

Get up close and personal with Beethoven’s Sixth and Dvorak’s Ninth in Close Encounters – two Wellington concerts by the NZSO, led by respected Australian conductor, Richard Gill.

Why are they known as the Pastoral and From the New World? Listen as we play extracts of the works, along with a full movement, exploring each piece in loving detail to reveal what makes them so bewitching!

This NZSO Community Programme is modelled on Richard Gill’s wonderfully popular Discovery series with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. It’s essential for anyone who wants to know more about classical music, and anyone who enjoyed Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts will love this!

Later in the year we’ll be performing Beethoven’s Sixth in full, when we present the Soundscapes tour. Close Encounters is the perfect way to prepare yourself!
